The book is basically useless without the pdf, but there is nothing to tell you you need a full blown laptop to access the pdf. My solution, eventually, was to download itunes onto a PC, download the audiobook in itunes, right-click on the title and choose "Show in Windows Explorer". This locates the audio file.
